Our Emerald Legacy: Understanding and Preventing Forest Fires

For those of us who call the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts home, the smell of pine needles and the sight of a lush green horizon are more than just scenery—they are our lifeblood. However, every summer, a shadow falls over these landscapes. Forest fires in Turkey have become a recurring tragedy that scars our mountains and breaks our hearts.

As we update our journals for 2026, we look back at a post written 15 years ago. Sadly, the message is more urgent now than it was then. To protect what we love, we must first understand the "why" behind these flames.

Why Do They Start? (The Harsh Reality)

While some fires are caused by natural phenomena like lightning, the vast majority are unfortunately the result of human negligence.

The Magnifying Glass Effect: A discarded glass bottle is not just trash; under the scorching Mediterranean sun, it acts as a lens that can ignite dry brush in minutes.

The Illusion of Control: A small picnic fire or a stubble burn (aniz) might seem under control, but a sudden shift in wind—common in our coastal regions—can turn a spark into an inferno.

Climate Change as a Catalyst: Rising global temperatures and prolonged droughts have made our forests "tinderboxes." The trees are drier, the air is hotter, and the window for a fire to spread has widened.

Why is Recovery So Difficult?

Nature is resilient, but it takes time. When a forest burns, we don't just lose trees; we lose an entire ecosystem.

Biodiversity: It takes decades for the complex web of birds, insects, and soil microorganisms to return.

Soil Erosion: Without tree roots to hold the earth, winter rains wash away the fertile topsoil, making it harder for new saplings to take root.

What Can We Do? (The Call to Action)

As a visitor or a resident, you are the first line of defense.

Zero-Tolerance for Fire: Between June and October, never light a fire outside designated, safe zones—even for a barbecue.

Take Your Trash: Leave nothing behind. Glass, plastic, and even cigarette butts must be disposed of safely in bins.

Be the Watchman: If you see even a tiny plume of smoke while driving or hiking, call 112 immediately. Minutes matter.

A Shared Responsibility

At Eva Luxury, we believe that true luxury is the ability to breathe fresh forest air and look out over a green canopy meeting the blue sea. We are committed to preserving this legacy. We aren't just renting villas; we are guardians of these coastlines.

Let’s keep our forests green so that the only thing that glows on our horizon is the sunset.
